The Crown

As a long time admirer of Martin Phipps, I was delighted when he asked me to help out on a couple of episodes of The Crown for Netflix. Martin brought a darker, more subdued tone to the score of the third series that went perfectly with the new cast of Olivia Colman, Tobias Menzies and Helena Bonham-Carter.

As with much of the music in The Crown, the pieces I wrote for the series balance electronic throbs and textures with a grander orchestral palette. We recorded the orchestral elements in Air Studios, and the music was mixed by the brilliant Olga Fitzroy.

I also wrote a piece for the opening episode of the new Series 5, where Imelda Staunton, the new Queen for 2022, is ‘protected’ from reading The Times while on board her yacht, Britannia.

The score for Series 3 was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Music and also for an Ivor Novello award for Best Television Soundtrack.
