Aliens Love Underpants

Tom Beattie at Tiger Aspect (who I’d previously worked with on Charlie & Lola) approached me to write a series of twelve songs based on the best-selling Aliens Love Underpants books. We decided on twelve different subjects (Holidays, Spaceships, Friends, Superheroes etc) and I wrote the lyrics and a number of annoyingly catchy tunes. The aliens (Ping, Pod, Zinky & BeepBop) are anarchic, silly and irrepressibly energetic and were voiced by Mark Silk & Jess Robinson. The songs were animated by the superb Steve Edge based on the style of Ben Cort’s drawings from the original books, and we ended up with twelve fun little pop videos that have been going down a storm on Sky Kids since their launch in 2017.

Sky really liked the shorts, so they commissioned a longer animated special, Aliens Love Underpants… And Panta Claus! This 24-minute film includes four more songs, but also more of a narrative, as Santa calls upon the aliens’ help to deliver 1.6 billion presents in a single night. The fantastic voice cast for the special includes Matt Lucas, Ashley Jensen, Romesh Ranganathan, Matthew Baynton, Tameka Empsom & Joanna Page.

The first series of songs have just been nominated for a Bafta for Best Short Form (Children’s) which is very exciting! Winners announced in November 2018.

The special will be broadcast on Sky One for Christmas 2018.
