Mother of Many

This beautiful short animated film directed by Emma Lazenby won the BAFTA for Best Short Animation in 2010. It follows a midwife through a day as she helps various mothers through labour.

Woven into the soundtrack (the awesome team at Fonic did the sound design) are lots of authentic voices and sounds from women in labour, as well as babies’ in utero heartbeats, including that of my second son, Zubin. I incorporated some of these elements into the musical fabric, as well as making use of my lovely bass melodica which seemed to have just the right combination of depth and ‘wheeze’ to communicate the effort of labour!
