In this new feature documentary, Lauren Greenfield paints an astonishing portrait of the former first lady of the Philippines.
The Kingmaker

PROJECT INFO

One of the best films I’ve had the privilege of working on, this documentary is a real must-see in 2019. As well as providing a fascinating insight into Imelda Marcos and Philippine history, it is also a meditation on power and corruption on a wider scale, which resonates globally. The access Lauren Greenfield gets to the 90-year-old Imelda is quite astonishing, and Variety described the film as ‘jaw-dropping’ in their review.

It was a real pleasure to work with the brilliant Jocelyn Pook on the soundtrack for the film and we recorded the score at Angel Studios in September 2019. I hope a soundtrack album will be released in due course.

The film itself has premiered in Venice, Toronto, Telluride and London Film Festivals and should be coming out in cinemas before the end of the year.

“In the end, ‘The Kingmaker’ leaves it to audiences to untangle the veracity of Imelda’s own myth-building. But it’s impossible to ignore what the film says about the perils of political dynasties, which audiences have back in America as well, between the Kennedys, the Bushes, the Clintons and now the Trumps. Even those with the best intentions can be corrupted, leveraging their ambitious wives and idiot sons to reclaim the power they believe to be rightfully theirs.”
Peter Debruge for Variety (August 2019)
